Crosby Sits, Pens Beat Flames
It was announced that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby would miss both games this weekend as a precautionary measure. Crosby had a swollen right cheek and it was thought that he could have mumps. Even without Crosby, the game went on. Marc-Andre Fleury got the nod for the Pens and Jonas Hiller got the start for the visiting Flames. The Penguins drew first blood just 48 seconds into the game, as Blake Comeau fired a wrist shot above Hiller's blocker for a 1-0 Pens lead. The Pens expanded their lead to 2-0 at 4:43 of the first period when Kris Letang deflected Simon Despres' shot past Hiller. The Flames got on the board at 12:15 when Johnny Gaudreau tucked in the rebound after Mikael Granlund shot the puck. After one period of play, the Pens had a 2-1 lead. The second period did not include any goals, but a combined total of seven penalties were called during the twenty-minute period. The Pens extended their lead to 3-1 when Steve Downie found Rob Klinkhammer, who wristed the puck past Hiller. The score held true and the Pens won 3-1.
