The San Jose Sharks hired Pete DeBoer as their head coach. DeBoer, 46, previously served as the head coach of the Florida Panthers from 2008 until 2011 and the New Jersey Devils from 2011 until 2014. During his time as head coach, he has compiled a record of (217-200-77). In his first season as the head coach of the Devils, he lead the team to the Stanley Cup Finals only to be defeated by the Los Angeles Kings. DeBoer replaces Todd McLellan, who recently was hired by the Edmonton Oilers as their head coach.

The Buffalo Sabres hired Dan Bylsma as their head coach. Bylsma, 44, served as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2009 until 2014. During his time as the Penguins' head coach, Bylsma compiled a record of (252-117-32). He lead the Penguins to six playoff berths and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Bylsma replaces Ted Nolan, who was fired after this past season.

The St. Louis Blues have agreed to a one-year contract with head coach Ken Hitchcock to return for his fifth season with the team. Hitchcock, 63, has served as the head coach of the Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and St. Louis Blues. He has a career record of (708-429-88-97). He lead the Stars to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances in 1999 and 2000. The Stars won the Cup in 1999. He has lead the Blues to the playoffs in each of his four seasons as their head coach.

The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Mike Babcock as their head coach. Babcock, 52, previously served as the head coach of the Anaheim Ducks from 2002-2004 and the Detroit Red Wings from 2005-2015. As a head coach, he has compiled a record of (527-285-19-119). In his first season as head coach of the Ducks, he lead them to the Stanley Cups Finals only to be defeated by the New Jersey Devils. He lead the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, having won the Cup in 2008. The Red Wings will acquire a third-round draft pick in 2015, 2016, or 2017 as compensation.

The Edmonton Oilers hired Todd McLellan as their head coach. McLellan, 47, previously served as the head coach of the San Jose Sharks. In seven seasons, he lead the Sharks to a record of (311-163-66) including six trips to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is the winningest coach in San Jose Sharks' history. McLellan replaces Todd Nelson, who took over as head coach after Dallas Eakins was fired.
